About

Neel Sarovar Bhavesh obtained his Ph.D. degree in Physical Chemistry in 2003 from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai, under the supervision of Prof. Ramakrishna V. Hosur. During his PhD, he worked on NMR spectroscopy of protein and nucleic acids. He developed new 3D triple-resonance NMR pulse sequences, HNN and HN(C)N, and high throughput and efficient resonance assignment protocol based on the pulse sequences. His work includes the discovery of a novel C-tetrad in DNA quadruples. Neel worked as a post-doctoral fellow in the group of Prof. Kurt Wüthrich at ETH Zürich, Switzerland. After that, he returned to India in 2008 and joined the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), New Delhi, where he works as a Group Leader. Neel was instrumental in establishing the high-field NMR spectrometers at ICGEB New Delhi and NII New Delhi. His group works in the area of protein-nucleic acid recognition, with special emphasis on understanding the specificity of the recognition during transcription.

Neel is an Adjunct Professor at the Department of Chemistry, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, and at the Special Centre for System Medicine (SCSM), School for Sanskrit and Indic Studies (SSIS), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi.  Neel frequently writes science articles for the common public and has edited two books: Biomedical Imaging Instrumentation- Applications in Tissue, Cellular and Molecular Diagnostics (2021) and When Science Meets Spirituality (2024).
